As summer inches closer to ending, we thought it would be helpful to provide a quick update on each Disney park. With our world continuing to change due to COVID-19, Disney has been forced to change its theme park operations, and has lost a ton of money as a result. The other day Disney released its earnings report for the last quarter (April to July) and lost $3 billion from the closure of its parks. Construction projects have been delayed and some new projects are delayed indefinitely.
However, not all is bad. Disney stock is up 9%, thankfully to the success of Disney+. Despite the restlessness of COVID-19, nine Disney parks are currently open around the world. The parks are operating at limited capacity, but at least providing some revenue and allowing Disney to learn ways to operate its parks in our new normal.
Summer 2020 has been the weirdest summer in our lifetimes. For many of us, summer is about Disney and its parks. We are looking forward to summer ending with the hope each passing day brings us closer to a vaccine or some breakthrough that can control COVID-19 and bring us back a “normal” world and a much needed retreat to a Disney park.
As we continue to dream, we will list each Disney Resort and the status of their parks. The Walt Disney World Resort, Disneyland Paris Resort, Tokyo Disney Resort and Shanghai Disney Resort are all open. The Hong Kong Disneyland Resort did reopen but had to re-close due to a spike of COVID-19 in the Hong Kong SAR. The Disneyland Resort planned to reopen on July 17, 2020, but canceled its reopening due to California’s recent surge of COVID-19 cases. Scroll down to see the full details of each resort below. (Current as of 12 August 2020)
Disneyland Resort
To date, the Disneyland Resort remains closed. Disney attempted to reopen the resort on July 17, 2020 (Disneyland’s 65th birthday), but was forced to cancel the planned reopening as California’s COVID-19 cases were setting new records. The Disneyland website lists this current statement:
Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park remain closed and will reopen at a later date, pending state and local government approvals.
Downtown Disney did reopen on July 9, 2020 and continues to remain open for a limited number of guests. Guests are required to wear face masks at all times, maintain 6 feet social distance from other parties and are subject to a temperature check from security upon arrival. Parking is at the Simba Parking Lot and guests are also encouraged to use credit cards over cash. For those planning to shop at Downtown Disney, Disney released the following information for shoppers:
In merchandise locations throughout the Downtown Disney District, while Guests will continue to discover favorite Disney items and unique products for the entire family, some modifications to the shopping experience have been established to help us manage capacity and foster physical distancing.
- Mobile Wait List: At some retail locations, including the World of Disney store and Marceline’s Confectionery, we may at times use a mobile wait list system to manage the number of Guests shopping when the location and/or queue are at capacity. Guests can choose to provide their name and mobile number to receive a text message when they are able to return. Data and message rates and other restrictions may apply.
- New Product Launches: Guests can still find new merchandise at the Downtown Disney District. However, monthly program releases and limited-edition merchandise at Disney-owned and -operated retail locations are not available for in-person purchase until further notice. Guests are invited to visit our Merchandise Events page for more information on future buying opportunities—and to learn how to take advantage of our new shopping platform, where Guests can purchase limited-edition merchandise online, subject to availability, while supplies last.
- Dressing Rooms: For the time being, dressing rooms are not available for use.
- Returns: Upon the reopening of merchandise locations, eligible returns and exchanges will be accepted at the World of Disney store, as well as the other Disney-owned and -operated locations in the Downtown Disney District, subject to the returns and exchange policy.
Most dining locations at Downtown Disney are open. Dining is limited to outdoor seating and all tables are six feet apart. Here is the official statement from Disney:
Dining locations at the Downtown Disney District have begun to reopen in a way that incorporates our enhanced health and safety measures, including physical distancing, the use of appropriate face coverings by Operating Participant employees, Cast Members and Guests, increased cleaning procedures and limited-contact Guest services. Additionally, at this time, following state and county guidelines, no indoor seating will be permitted; all seating is outdoor patio only.
To promote physical distancing and touchless transactions, a number of changes have been made to our dining locations, including:
- Increased outdoor patio-style seating
- Parties seated at tables 6 feet apart
- Digital or single-use menus available at many locations
Reservations
For some table service restaurants, Guests can make advance dining reservations by booking online. Some dining locations may also use their own reservation system or virtual waitlist. Please check with each individual location to confirm their reservation process. Keep in mind, upon your arrival, all members of your party must be present before seating, and hosts must bring your entire party to the table at one time.
If a Guest has a dining reservation for the day and arrives at the Simba Parking Lot or the Downtown Disney District when entry is paused, the Guest should speak with a Cast Member and present proof of the day’s dining reservation for assistance.
Outside Downtown Disney, the three official Disneyland Resort hotels continue to remain closed. Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel and Spa and Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel were set to reopen at the end of July, but those plans changed when the resort canceled the reopening of the parks. The Disneyland Hotel has yet to set any reopening date. Here is the official statement from Disney:
The Hotels of the Disneyland Resort remain closed and will reopen at a later date.
Other than the above, Disney has not released any other information regarding the resort. To date, new California COVID-19 cases may finally be shrinking, hopefully allowing for a chance to examine theme parks and provide an opening update.
Along with Disneyland, every theme park in California remains closed with one exception, Knott’s Berry Farm. Rather than operate traditionally, Knott’s Berry Farm is open for dinning, using its mining town area as a big open outside dining area, complete with actors walking the upper levels, providing entertainment at a safe distance. We agree California Adventure would be a great place for outside dining if Disney chooses to pursues this option (they have not released any statements at this time).
As California natives and Disney Resort passholders, we agree Disneyland should remain closed. COVID-19 is still a terrible virus that we as a society cannot control. Masks do help but its safer to remain home and away from the crowds, especially as California has struggled to contain its COVID-19 outbreak. As much as we would love to see Disneyland reopen, it is too unsafe to do so now. Be sure to follow Disneyland’s official website for new updates and information.
Walt Disney World Resort
As of July 15, 2020 and in contrast to the Disneyland Resort, the Walt Disney World Resort is open. All four theme parks, Disney Springs and a handful resort hotels (mostly DVC villas) are currently open for business. Blizzard Beach, Typhoon Lagoon and a long list of Disney resort hotels remain closed. Additionally, theme park hours have been reduced (Magic Kingdom closes at 7PM) and special events, character meet-and-greets and firework shows all canceled. Here is the official statement from Disney:
• All 4 Walt Disney World theme parks and Disney Springs are now open. Park attendance is managed via the Disney Park Pass reservation system—to enter a park, both a park reservation and valid admission for the same park on the same date are required for Guests ages 3 and up.
• Additionally, select Walt Disney World Resort hotels, including Disney Deluxe Villa Resorts, are open to Guests. Upon reopening, theme parks, Disney Resort Hotels, restaurants and other offerings may be modified, limited in capacity and subject to availability or closure.
• We have taken enhanced health and safety measures. Follow all posted instructions while visiting Walt Disney World Resort. An inherent risk of exposure to COVID-19 exists in any public place where people are present.
Theme park admission is limited (I hear its around 30% of park capacity). In order to visit one of the parks, guests must reserve a spot via the new Disney Park Pass system. Through this system, guests pick a date and park to visit. Guests must already have their tickets linked to their My Disney Experience account and park hopping is unavailable. Here is the official statement from Disney:
The 4 Walt Disney World theme parks are now open!
To manage attendance during this reopening period, while also helping Guests plan ahead before their arrival, we are introducing the new Disney Park Pass system. During this time, all Guests with valid admission are required to make a reservation in advance for each park entry, using this new online tool.
To enter a park, both a park reservation AND valid admission for the same park on the same date are required for each person in your party ages 3 and up (limit one park per day).
Booking Your Park Reservations
The Disney Park Pass system is now open to Guests with valid admission. The number of theme park reservation days you can hold at one time varies based on your plans:
- Disney Resort and other select hotel Guests can make park reservations for dates during their stay for the number of days that they have valid theme park admission.
- Annual Passholders can make theme park reservations for up to 3 days at a time, and for their length of stay if staying at a Disney Resort or other select hotel.
- Existing ticket holders can make reservations for the number of days of valid theme park admission.
Park reservations are available through September 26, 2021, based on your Resort stay and ticket eligibility or ticket eligibility window.
If you booked a vacation package, your ticket eligibility is tied to your package travel dates. To make a park reservation for a different date, be sure to modify your vacation package dates.
If you have a room-only reservation at a Disney Resort or other select hotel, please call the Disney Reservation Center or call your travel professional to upgrade to a vacation package with tickets—and then make your theme park reservations.
Want to Book a New Vacation?
You can purchase new Disney Resort hotel packages, purchase new theme park tickets and make park reservations for arrivals on select dates in 2020 and 2021. Prior to purchasing tickets, be sure to view theme park reservation availability online.
Please note that park reservations are limited in number and subject to availability. Availability can change until the park reservation is finalized.
Important Details
- Reservations are limited and subject to availability and are not guaranteed until a reservation is finalized.
- At this time, Guests will be able to select one park per day; visiting more than one park per day will be temporarily unavailable upon the reopening of the theme parks due to attendance limitations.
- A park reservation must be made for each day of entry. If you have a multi-day ticket, you will be required to make a park reservation for each date of your visit.
- We highly recommend that you make your park reservation as soon as you complete your ticket purchase, as availability can change until the reservation is finalized.
- If you need to modify your reservation, please visit My Plans to cancel your reservation. Then, book a new reservation (subject to availability).
Unsurprisingly, the system had issues at launch but has since stabilized. A big reason for the shorter hours at the parks is the low number of guests visiting each day. Fast Pass Plus is currently suspended and the rumor is lines are incredibly short around the resort. For the resort hotels, here is the official statement from Disney:
The following Disney Resort hotels are now open and accepting new reservations:
- Bay Lake Tower at Disney’s Contemporary Resort
- Boulder Ridge Villas at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge
- Copper Creek Villas & Cabins at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge
- Disney’s Animal Kingdom Villas – Kidani Village
- Disney’s Beach Club Villas
- Disney’s BoardWalk Villas
- Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort
- Disney’s Contemporary Resort
- Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground
- Disney’s Old Key West Resort
- Disney’s Polynesian Villas & Bungalows
- Disney’s Pop Century Resort
- Disney’s Riviera Resort
- Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa
- The Villas at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa
With the opening of these hotels, we have taken a measured and deliberate approach to implement a number of health and safety measures based on guidance from various governmental authorities and health agencies.
In addition, we currently plan to open the following Disney Resort hotels to booked Guests on the following dates. Please note that the reopening dates have been revised for Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort and Disney’s Art of Animation Resort.
August 24 | Disney’s Yacht Club Resort |
September 21 | Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa |
October 4 | Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort |
October 14 | Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort |
November 1 | Disney’s Art of Animation Resort |
While reopening dates were previously shared for Disney’s Beach Club Resort and Disney’s BoardWalk Inn, these Disney Resort hotels will remain closed until further notice, as the reopening timeline continues to be reevaluated.
Future reopening dates are subject to change and Guests’ reservations could still be modified to other Disney Resort hotels if needed.
Given the current situation, there are some Disney Resort hotels and other areas that are not, as of this time, being scheduled for reopening yet. We will continue to evaluate the situation and reopen more locations when the environment is right to do so.
While these plans may evolve, we will be monitoring the constantly changing health environment and its impact on the state of Florida as we find the right time to welcome back even more of our Guests.
We continue to assist Guests with current hotel reservations for 2020, modifying travel plans as needed.

Health and Hygiene
New measures have been implemented across Walt Disney World dining locations to promote health and hygiene, including:
- Enhanced Cleaning: We’ve increased cleaning in high-traffic areas such as public elevators and escalators, handrails, benches, tables, handles, restrooms and more. Additionally, seating areas, dining areas and pagers will be cleaned between Guests.
- Temperature Screenings: Guests dining in table-service restaurants at Disney Resort hotels will undergo a temperature screening prior to entering the location. As with other locations at Walt Disney World Resort that require temperature screenings before entry, anyone displaying a temperature of 100.4 F or above will be directed to an additional rescreening. Those with temperatures 100.4 F or above will not be allowed entry; those in their party will not be allowed entry either.
- Reduced-Contact Menus: At quick-service restaurants, menus are displayed on signage. And at table-service restaurants, you can scan a code with your mobile device to access the digital menu.
- Self-Serve Changes: Beverages and other items that were previously self-serve are now served by Cast Members instead.
Enhanced Technology
Use convenient technologies to minimize your contact with others:
- Mobile Order Service: A time-saving feature of the My Disney Experience app, mobile order service enables you to order ahead at select dining locations and pick up food during a designated arrival window.
- Mobile Check-In for Reservations: Check in to your dining reservations at select table-service restaurants using the new mobile check-in feature on the My Disney Experience app. There’s no need to visit the host stand to check in!
- Scannable Codes for Select Restaurant Menus: While at a table-service restaurant, you can use your own mobile device to scan a code for access to the digital menu.
- Cashless Payments: At this time, it is recommended all Guests use cashless payment options, including debit cards, credit cards and Disney Gift Cards. Guests can also opt for contactless payment options—such as mobile wallets—or use cash to purchase a Disney Gift Card at Guest Relations and select merchandise locations. Disney Resort hotel Guests can also use MagicBands to charge their purchase to their Disney Resort hotel folio.
Dining Experiences
Additional changes to Walt Disney World dining experiences include:
- Menu items may vary. For specific menu information, check the restaurant’s online menu.
- Character Dining will not be offered during the initial reopening, with the exception of modified Character Dining experiences at Garden Grill Restaurant and Topolino’s Terrace – Flavors of the Riviera.
- Dinner shows will not be offered during the initial reopening.
- Dining locations are limited in capacity. Some locations will remain temporarily closed.
- Private dining and in-room delivery will not be offered during the initial reopening window.
- Mobile order service is offered at select quick-service dining locations throughout the Walt Disney World theme parks (when open), Disney Springs and select Disney Resort hotels.
We are happy Walt Disney World is open, allowing Disney to make some money to offset its $3 billion lose last quarter. Our biggest fear is the loss of revenue will delay or cancel future theme projects. Although the rumors are coming in on the future of some projects (we’ll cover this in a separate post), at least not every future project is a loss, yet. We also hear from guests the parks feel safe and almost all guests are following the strict health procedures. In contrast to the rest of Florida, the parks feel much safer.
It’s tempting to make a trip to Orlando, but we decided we just can’t risk it. With both of us regularly in contact with numerous family members over 65 years old and the ever changing and even long lasting implications from having COVID-19, we agreed to wait until next year, unless a major change combating the virus occurs beforehand.
Lastly, Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party has been canceled for 2020. No word yet on Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party. Be sure to check our Walt Disney World’s official website for information concerning your visit. Things can change instantly so keep an on eye on the website for up to date information.
Tokyo Disney Resort
On July 1, 2020, the Tokyo Disney Resort reopened. As Japan experienced significantly less COVID-19 cases than the United States, the Tokyo theme parks opened earlier than their US counterparts. Both Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea are open, along with all four official Tokyo resort hotels.
Like in the US, shows and character meet-and-greets have all been canceled. Certain attractions and lands have also been temporally closed. Strict health procedures are in place and guests must wear a mask at all times. Here is the official statement from the Tokyo Disney Resort website:
This is to share the decision that both Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea will reopen on July 1, 2020.
With the reopening of both parks, we are implementing measures in accordance with the Amusement Park and Theme Park New Coronavirus Infection Containment Guidelines that were developed based on the government’s Basic Policies for Novel Coronavirus Disease Control, and additionally are following government agency guidance to give top priority to the health and safety of our guests and cast members in our operations.
We will be deliberate in our operations, thoroughly implementing health and safety measures such as controlled capacity through limits on attendance, limited visitors in attractions, shops, restaurants, and other facilities, regular cleaning and sanitization, proactively requesting guests to maintain social distancing, among other things.
We will also endeavor to promote health and safety by having the information filled in for the primary contact person when guests purchase tickets.
All of the cast members will work together to operate the parks so that guests are able to enjoy the experience. There may be instances in which we cause inconvenience to our guests but ask for your kind understanding and cooperation.
Here is the official statement regarding health procedures:
Take part in temperature screening
Temperature screenings will be conducted during admission time, and guests with a temperature of 37.5 degrees Celsius or above, or cold-like symptoms will be asked to refrain from entering.
Wear masks
- Guests are required to wear masks at all times inside the parks(optional for Guests under the age of 2), except when dining. However, in order to prevent heat stroke, during the summer season when the temperature and humidity are high, if guests are outdoors with adequate distance from other people, masks may be removed.
- Please take your used mask home.
- Please be considerate of others when coughing or sneezing.
Maintain social distancing
- Markings are installed to maintain the necessary distance in facility queue lines, seats, restaurant tables, benches, etc., and guests are asked to cooperate in order to maintain social distancing.
- We ask guests to have their entire party together before queuing at the Park entrance and refrain from having members of their party join them in the queue later.
Wash and sanitize hands
Hand sanitizers are placed in attractions, shops, restaurants, restrooms and other locations in the Park, so please sanitize hands and fingers and wash hands regularly.
Other
- Cashless transactions such as credit cards and electronic money are recommended.
- If guests become ill after entering the park, they may be asked to leave depending on their symptoms.
- If you don’t feel well after entering the Park, please go to Central First Aid or contact a cast member for assistance.
- To prevent heat stroke, please remember to stay hydrated.
- Please arrive within the given time frame on your Park ticket.
【Individuals for whom the following applies are asked to refrain from visiting. 】
- Guests who have been in close contact with individuals who have tested positive for the new coronavirus
- Guests who have family members or close acquaintance who are suspected of being infected
- Guests who have been to countries or areas that the government has banned entry from, or requires monitoring after entering the country, as well as guests who have been in close contact with residents of the above, in the last 14 days
- Elderly people and people with medical conditions who may develop serious symptoms if infected are advised to consider cautiously whether to visit the parks.
- Guests’ personal information may be provided to public health authorities upon request for the purpose of preventing the spread of the new coronavirus.

Since the Tokyo Disney Resort reopened, we haven’t heard anything negative. Following the rules are a huge part of Japanese culture and we are confident the Tokyo Disney Resort is probably the safest Disney resort to visit. Of all the locations of Disney parks around the world, Japan had the least amount of COVID-19 cases. Unfortunately, Americans are not allowed into Japan at this time, arguably making the parks even safer.
The resort closed all of its shows and areas with dense crowds and we agree this is the right decision. Although Big Band Beat is the best Disney show in the world, it makes sense for the sake of public health to close it temporarily. The brand new billion dollar Beauty and the Beast miniland was supposed to open at the end of April, but its opening has been delayed due to COVID-19.
We wish we could travel to the Tokyo parks and plan to next year if the world becomes safe again. Lastly, if you manage to sneak into the parks, remember, no screaming (strictly enforced)! Be sure to follow the official Tokyo Disney Resort website for new updates and information.
Disneyland Paris Resort
On July 15, 2020 the Disneyland Paris Resort reopened. To date, both parks of the resort are open, along with most resort hotels. As expected, certain experiences remain closed, like character meet-and-greets and character dining. Face masks are required for everyone 11 and up and must be worn at all times, expect while dining.
Similar to Walt Disney World, guests with an annual pass or non-dated ticket must register online a reserve a spot for a specific day. Guests with a dated ticket or a hotel package with park tickets will receive admission for those specific dates and do not need to reserve a spot via the online system. Change fees have also been disabled and guests can modify hotel reservations and packages up to 7 days before arrival free of charge.
Here are the official statements from Disney:
Register to access the Disney Parks on your chosen date
Attendance at Disneyland Paris will be limited during the initial reopening. Guests who have a non-dated ticket or Annual Pass, or who intend to buy one, must register in advance using a new online registration platform, to gain entry to the Parks on the day. Guests who already have a dated ticket, do not need to register and reserve a date. Likewise, Guests with packages that include park admittance will receive admission for the duration of their stay and do not need to use the online registration platform.
Our attractions
In attractions, the configuration of each ride including boarding will be adapted for physical distancing between groups or families. Single Rider and FASTPASS services will be unavailable.
– Waiting lines at all of our attractions have been adapted, with clear ground markings to maintain correct physical distancing.
– In addition to the already high standards of cleanliness in place, the frequency of disinfection measures will increase and be enhanced for specific areas, including ride vehicles, safety harnesses, handrails, turnstiles and barriers.
– Hand sanitizers will be available at the entrance and exit of each attraction.

Some experiences, shows or events will not be available or may be modified upon reopening depending on the evolution of the safety and sanitary measures and recommendations from public authorities. This includes offerings such as Disney Stars on Parade and Disney Illuminations night time spectacular which will return at a later date.
The Lion King: Rhythms of the Pride Lands top-rated show will reopen during summer 2020, and theaters will adopt a new seating configuration to promote physical distancing. Guests can check the availability of attractions and entertainment through the resort’s official website and app.
In our restaurants
New measures have been implemented across Disneyland Paris dining locations to promote health and hygiene.
We’ve increased cleaning in high-traffic areas such as public elevators and escalators, handrails, benches, tables, handles, restrooms and more. Additionally, seating areas and dining areas will be cleaned between Guests.
– You can view restaurant menus on our website and in our official mobile app. Single-use paper menus will be available if required in the restaurant.
– Buffet restaurants will change to a new all-you-can-eat table service offer.
– You can book a table in one of our table service restaurants up to 2 months in advance. Simply arrive at the restaurant at the time you booked for to avoid waiting in line.
– Contactless payment is available in all our restaurants
– Sanitizing stations are available in each restaurant.
– Please be aware that face coverings are required for each guest age 11 and up, which must be worn in all public areas—including while entering and exiting dining locations—and can be removed while eating or drinking
– All health and safety measures will be displayed in and in front of each restaurant.
– The traditional Character Dining experience is suspended.
Lastly, here is the official statement for the resort’s hotels:
In our Hotels & Resorts
From July 15th, Disneyland Paris hotels will start a phased reopening. As we open our hotels, we are taking a deliberate approach to implement a number of enhanced health and safety measures based on guidance from French government and health authorities. In addition, we currently plan to open the following Disney Hotels to booked Guests on the following dates: Disney’s Newport Bay Club Hotel (July 15th), Disney’s Hotel Cheyenne (July 20th), Disney’s Hotel Santa Fe (August 3rd), Disneyland Hotel (September 7th). Disney’s Sequoia Lodge Hotel and Disney’s Davy Crocket Ranch will remain closed during the summer with reopening dates announced at a later time.
Please note that given the fluidity of the current environment, these dates are subject to change and Guests’ reservations could still be modified to other Disneyland Paris hotels if needed.
While these plans may evolve, we will be monitoring the constantly changing health environment and its impact in France as we find the right time to welcome back even more of our Guests.
Common areas
– Ground markings and physical signage will help guide Guests throughout the Hotels in order to maintain physical distancing between groups and families
– Only 1 member of a family or group will be allowed to walk to the reception desk at the same time
– Lifts must be used by 1 family or group at a time
– We’ve increased cleaning in high-traffic areas such as public elevators and escalators, handrails, benches, tables, handles, restrooms and more.
Hotel Rooms
– Prior to your arrival, your room will undergo thorough cleaning—with attention to 10 high-touch areas including door handles, light switches, thermostats and TV remote controls.
– Cleaning equipment such as micro-fibre cloths will be replaced for each room cleaning.
– Housekeeping will enter your room upon your request only.
Inside your room, you’ll find individually wrapped glassware, disposable cups and spoons for tea and coffee, double-cased pillows. Throw pillows and quilted bedspreads, as well and pens and notepads, will no longer be available in Hotel rooms.
Activities, Resort Amenities & Recreation
– Our Disney Characters will continue to be present to surprise and delight you in our Disney Hotels, while respecting physical distancing rules
– Amenities and recreation will be modified based on physical distancing and health guidelines.
– Pools will operate with reduced capacity to allow for physical distancing
– Fitness centers will open in alignment with local regulations, and may have reduced hours and capacity
– The valet parking service will be available at certain Hotels, and the Kids Corner will be closed in all Hotels.
Like the Tokyo Disney Resort, we haven’t heard anything negative regarding Disneyland Paris’ reopening. The resort is following the same model as the other Disney resorts and nothing surprised us with its reopening restrictions. Americans are not allowed into the EU at this time so it’ll be a while before we visit the park again. Be sure to follow the official Disneyland Paris website for any new updates.
Hong Kong Disneyland Resort
Hong Kong Disneyland did reopen back in June but was forced to close again due to a spike in COVID-19 cases in Hong Kong. At the time of this writing, the resort remains closed with no date set for a second re-opening. Although the park remains closed, the three resort hotels are currently open.
Here is the official statement from Disney:
- As required by the government and health authorities in line with prevention efforts taking place across Hong Kong, Hong Kong Disneyland Park is temporarily closed until further notice.
- The resort hotels remain open with adjusted level of services. Enhanced health and safety measures that reflect the guidance of health and government authorities have been put in place, such as social distancing measures and increased cleaning and sanitization.
- We are in contact with health authorities and the government about the situation.
We have no further information to report but will keep on eye on the resort for more information. Be sure to the official Hong Kong Disneyland Resort website for updates and new information.
Shanghai Disney Resort
Disney’s newest resort reopened way back in May. As of this writing, the park is still open and has not re-closed. Like the other open parks, guests are required to make a reservation to enter the park. Here is the official statement from Disney:
During this initial reopening phase, the park will institute new measures and procedures,
including opening with limited attendance and required advanced ticketing and reservations, accommodating social distancing in queues, restaurants, ride vehicles and other facilities
throughout the park, and implementing increased frequency of sanitization and disinfection.
Ticket sales will be available via the resort’s official online channels and official travel partners’ channels beginning on May 8 at 8:00 a.m., with a limited number of tickets available each day during the initial reopening.
On May 11, the majority of Shanghai Disneyland’s attractions, rides, some shows and shopping
and dining locations will resume operations, with controlled attendance. Some interactive attractions and experiences, such as children play areas, and theater shows will remain closed. Guests can check the availability of attractions and entertainment through the resort’s official
website and app.
To accommodate social distancing, parades and nighttime spectaculars will also return at a later
date. During the initial reopening phase, a special Disney character procession, Mickey and Friends Express, will take place several times daily, and the Enchanted Storybook Castle will come
to life with light and music at dusk each day with Evening Magical Moments. Beloved Disney characters will appear in the park in a new way, as they make appearances in each of the themed lands, greeting and welcoming everyone back to Shanghai Disneyland. Close interaction and
close-up photos with characters will be suspended during the initial phase of reopening.
The frequency of sanitization measures will be increased in order to augment the standards of cleanliness already in place throughout the park, and hand sanitizers will be available at attractions, restaurant and stores.
To date, we haven’t heard anything negative from Shanghai’s reopening. With the resort open since May, it’s positive to know the resort has not re-closed and is continuing to do well with its restrictive opening. Hopefully the resort will continue to stay open with no major issues. Follow Shanghai Disney Resort’s official website for new updates.
Conclusion
As COVID-19 continues to ravage the world, four out of six Disney resorts are open and operating. The parks, resort hotels and shopping districts have implemented temperature checks, minimal occupancy percentages and enforced the use of face masks. The experience is a little different for most but the Disney magic continues. Hopefully humanity will find a way to beat this virus and allow things to go back to a state of semi-normal and allow the last two resorts to reopen.
In the meantime, we will avoid the parks for our safety and the safety of others we love. We will continue to monitor the progress of each resort and provide updates when needed. Please use this guide to get a grasp of the open resorts, the safety measures they have implemented and if you are thinking about traveling to a Disney park, what to expect. We hope this update provided you all the necessary information. And if it did not, please check out the official website of each resort for up to date information.
