Hello! Welcome to our page on Disney’s newest resort, the Shanghai Disney Resort! The resort opened on June 2016, after five years of development, and is the first Disney resort in Mainland China and the second in China after the Hong Kong Disneyland Resort. It is also the largest resort in China and three times the size of Hong Kong Disneyland.
A personal project of Disney’s then CEO, Bob Iger, the resort consists of Shanghai Disneyland Park, Shanghai Disneyland Hotel, Toy Story Hotel, DisneyTown and Wishing Star Lake. The resort was designed with enough space for the addition of two more theme parks in the future. Since its opening in 2016, Shanghai Disneyland Park has expanded once, with the addition of a Toy Story themed land in 2018 and in December 2019, ground broke on a Zootopia themed land.
DisneyTown is similar to Downtown Disney and Disney Springs, a large scale shopping district with retail and dining locations. The 420 room Shanghai Disneyland Hotel was built with an Art Nouveau theme and is Shanghai Disney Resort’s flagship hotel. The other hotel on property, the 800 room Toy Story Hotel, is the resort’s “budget” hotel and is themed to Toy Story.
The resort cost over $5 billion dollars to construct and is owned by both The Walt Disney Company (47%) and a group of companies controlled by the Shanghai government (53%). Whereas Hong Kong Disneyland struggled upon opening, Shanghai Disney Resort has been a success. Anchored by state of the art attractions, such as TRON Lightcycle Power Run and the largest Disney castle ever constructed, Enchanted Storybook Castle, Shanghai Disneyland was built to be big, powerful and a juggernaut.
The park includes a long list of other powerful and popular attractions. Guests can ride Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, Soaring Over the Horizon and Roaring Rapids. The park also has an entire land dedicated to pirates, Treasure Cove. Instead of featuring a version of the classic Pirates of the Caribbean attraction made popular at Disneyland in the 1960s, Shanghai Disneyland instead revamped the entire concept for the 21st Century and created the most insane pirates adventure ever, with Pirates of the Caribbean: Battle of the Sunken Treasure. The park features a stacked lineup of attractions.
Shanghai Disneyland is one of two parks (the other being Hong Kong Disneyland) Stella and I have not personally visited. We planned to visit in April 2020 but were forced to cancel our trip (Full details can be found HERE). With COVID-19, we plan to visit some other time in the future. However, we can still provide plenty of content for those wishing to plan a trip to Disney’s newest resort.
