Hello! Welcome to our Hong Kong Disneyland Resort page! The resort opened on September 12, 2005 on reclaimed land in Penny’s Bay, Lantau Island. A joint venture between The Walt Disney Company and the government of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Disneyland Resort is the first Disney resort in China and consists of Hong Kong Disneyland Park and three official Disney hotels.
The Hong Kong Disneyland Resort is the smallest Disney resort at 320 acres, with Hong Kong Disneyland Park covering only 68 acres (about the size of California Adventure). Room for a second park does exist directly across from Hong Kong Disneyland Park, but no plans for a second park have been announced. Room for a fourth hotel is also available.
With a cumulative total of 1750 hotel rooms, the current hotels of the resort are the 400-room Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel, 600-room Disney’s Hollywood Hotel and the newest hotel on property, the 750-room Disney Explorers Lodge. The Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel is the resort’s flagship hotel and is Victorian themed, similar to the Grand Floridan Resort and Spa at Walt Disney World. Disney’s Hollywood Hotel is an art deco style hotel themed to 1930s Hollywood. And Disney Explorers Lodge is themed to exploration with four themed areas: Polynesian, Asian, South American rainforest and African plains.
Hong Kong Disneyland Park features seven themed lands: Main Street, USA, Fantasyland, Adventureland, Tomorrowland, Grizzly Gulch, Mystic Point and Toy Story Land. Main Street, USA, Fantasyland, Adventureland and Tomorrowland are similar to their American counterparts. Tomorrowland is notable for hosting two Marvel themed attractions, The Iron Man Experience and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Nano Battle!
Grizzly Gulch, the park’s first expansion, hosts Big Grizzly Mountain Runaway Mine Cars. A roller coaster inside Big Grizzly Mountain, the attraction is similar to Big Thunder Mountain and even includes a section where the train moves backwards. The second park expansion, Mystic Point, hosts Mystic Manor, a state of the art dark ride inspired by the Haunted Mansion. However, instead of ghosts on a Southern Plantation, the attraction’s story line is a lighthearted, fantasy-based theme.
Toy Story Land, the park’s latest expansion, is themed to the successful Pixar movies. Toy Story Land at Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Shanghai Disneyland are similar. Currently, a Frozen themed land is under construction. Additionally, the park’s icon, Sleeping Beauty Castle (same one as Disneyland Park in California) is currently undergoing a refurbishment to become taller.
Hong Kong Disneyland is one of two parks (the other being Shanghai Disneyland) Stella and I have not personally visited. We planned to visit in April 2020 but were forced to cancel our trip (Full details can be found HERE). With COVID-19, we plan to visit some other time in the future. However, we can still provide plenty of content for those wishing to plan a trip to Disney’s first Chinese resort.
